The largest and nicest of the three Kamaole beaches with fine white sand and great swimming conditions is Kamaole Beach 1. This crescent-shaped slice of paradise is about â…“ of a mile long. Kamaole Beach 1 or the shortened version (locals call it) "Kam 1" is a wide, sandy beach, with good swimming. The north end of this stretch of beach is called “Charley Young Beach.” The Charley Young end of Kam I is more popular with locals, and since the lifeguard and more visible parking and beach access for Kam I is at the other end of the beach, Charley Young is not usually as crowded with visitors. The distance from the Charlie Young side of Kamaole Beach 1 to the opposite side is makes for an awesome down and back swim. Snorkeling is good towards the points of the beach like that at Kamaole beach 2. There's also a grassy area at the south end for picnics, bbqing and playing. Parking is located along South Kihei Road or in a small parking lot fronting Kam 1. If all is full, a large dirt lot is located right across the street. A lifeguard station, restrooms, showers and a couple of water fountains can be found at this Kamaole 1 as well as ADA-accessible ramps from the beach park to the beach.
Extra Info: “Charley Young Beach” was named after a man that owned a house just above the beach for many years. Charley Young who was a military reporter who came to Maui at the wrong time during WWII when all of these beaches were taken over and made to simulate enemy beach landings. After the war Charley got his land back and built his house.
